Diamond pet foods were recalled in late December because of aflatoxin contamination. Aflatoxin is a fungus on corn which can cause liver problems (and can be fatal) in animals.
Nineteen varieties of Diamond pet food produced in the Gaston, SC facility have been recalled. Food was distributed to many states on East Coast which include North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, and Georgia.
The Gaston, SC bags will have a capital "G" will be in the 11th or 12th position of the date code of 18-55 lb bags and in the 9th position of 4 and 8 lb bags. The lot codes in the recall include "Best by 01-March-07" through "Best by 10-June-07".
UPDATE 2/13/2006 : Diamond pet foods has narrowed the list of the products affected by the aflatoxin contamination to only Diamond Maintenance Dog and Diamond Premium Adult Dog with "Best Buy" dates of April 3, 4, 5, and 11, 2007.
If you have any diamond pet food that is described above, DO NOT FEED IT TO YOUR PET and return them to the place of purchase. If your pet shows any signs of illness, bring them to the hospital immediately.
Symptoms of aflatoxin poisoning may include sluggish and lethargic behavior, lack of appetite, vomiting, bloody diarrhea, and yellowing of the eyes, gums, and/or skin.
If you think your pet has eaten one of these products, we recommend blood work to examine liver and kidney values, even if the pet is not symptomatic.
